With most polls indicating that the ruling PLD will win most posts up in the 2010 election, the party celebrated its victory in its campaign closure event yesterday. The party expects to win in 30 provinces and in the National District, according to a recent Asisa poll.
Leading PLD figures President Leonel Fernandez, First Lady Margarita Cedeno, Vice President Rafael Alburquerque and candidates to congressional and municipal posts for Greater Santo Domingo attended a grand closing party at Plaza Juan Baron on Santo Domingo's Malecon to the music of former Santo Domingo Mayor and PRD politician Johnny Ventura. Ventura delighted audiences with his popular merengue, "La agarradera."
The party distributed mops and belts allusive to the campaign motto and theme of giving the other parties a big sweep (a barrer con to') and a beating (esa pela va). As of 5pm a final convoy with PLD followers toured the northern Santo Domingo barrios of Gualey, 27 de Febrero, Simon Bolivar, Capotillo, Villas Agricolas, Villa Consuelo, Villa Maria, Villa Francisco, San Carlos, San Miguel, Ciudad Nueva and the Colonial City, despite the rainfall, ending at the Plaza Juan Baron for the final bash.
The final closing speech was by National District senator Reinaldo Pared Perez who declared: "You are intelligent people, you do not make mistakes, you know that voting for the candidates of the PLD and allied parties you are voting for progress and development".
