The government has declared a nationwide holiday for Saturday, 15, Sunday, 16 May and Monday, 17 May until 12 noon, "to make it easier for people to exercise their right to vote".
Through Decree 264-10, President Leonel Fernandez exempted public service bodies, such as hospitals, fire departments, transport, private security and other, similar workers from the application of the decree, saying they should carry on their work as normal.
The decree stresses that employers and directors of these service entities should adopt measures that will permit their workers or employees to exercise their right to vote.
The decree makes the ministries of Labor, Interior and Police, and the Central Electoral Board (JCE) responsible for its application. The Executive issued the decree on Thursday 13 May.
On the downside, sale of alcoholic beverages is suspended from Friday, 14 May at midnight until 3 hours after the elections.
