The Dominican Republic, as part of the Caribbean Forum (Cariforum), will take part in the European Union - Latin America and the Caribbean Summit (EU-ALC) that begins tomorrow, Saturday, in Madrid. A mini-summit will be held in advance of the main event to deal with the issues relevant to the increasing import of consumer goods under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
President Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to leave Santo Domingo for Spain on Sunday night, to take part in the VI Summit of Heads of State and of Government for the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean that will begin at 10am on Tuesday morning.
The Customs Department (DGA) says that between 2009 and February of this year, the Dominican Republic has imported US$31.7 million worth of goods under the terms of the EPA. These imports were sparkling wines from Spain and alcoholic beverages (mostly whiskey) from the United Kingdom.
