National Drug Control Department (DNCD) officers have dismantled an international ring made up of doctors and pharmacists who engaged in selling controlled substances to clients in the United States through a Call Center. The group gave its clients the impression that it was US-based.
Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said that the group has a call center and that they even had the prescription forms that the DNCD requires. The DNCD issues these forms that authorize the required medicines or controlled substances. Canadian citizen Rafael Antonio Castillo Aybar and Dominicans Vidal Rosario Reyes, Jose Bladimir Hernandez Jimenez, Francisco Alberto Lopez and Hector Antonio Hierro Luna have been detained In connection with the case.
The network had 350,000 tablets of a substance known as Alprazolam (Sold in the US under the names of Xanax, Xanor, Alprax and Niravam. It is a highly potent short-acting drug of the benzodiazepine class). The authorities also seized three vehicles, 2 SUVs, a red Ford Explorer and a black Lincoln, plus a blue Honda van. The Call Center was located on the Mella Highway at the corner of Charles De Gaulle Avenue in eastern Santo Domingo.
This is the first case of this type that has been discovered in the Dominican Republic, where doctors and several of the country's major pharmacies have been found to be involved in the trafficking of substances controlled by the DNCD. Rosado Mateo said that they are digging deeper into the case and as soon as they finish investigating, they will reveal the names of the pharmacies and the doctors involved. The ring used the country to send controlled substances to the United States in an operation involving millions of dollars. According to the investigations, which began several months ago, the ring acquired the medicines in several pharmacies and a group of doctors was in charge of writing the prescriptions.
