49.8% or 10,399 of 21,189 young citizens who had applied for their cedulas and would have turned 18 in time for the 16 May election did not bother to pick up their cedulas or voting cards from the Central Electoral Board (JCE) in time, reports 7dias.com.do. Of the total, 10,035 are men and 11,154 are women. The deadline was Friday, 14 May at midnight. Several comments on the news story, analyzed the failure to pick up their cedulas as evidence of just how unattractive the congressional and municipal candidates are to the young generation.
A large contingent of young people has been running a protest encouraging voters to write NONE on their ballot sheets. The NONE promoters said that the difference would be counted in the amount of annulled votes before 2010 and those that will be counted in 2010.
Commentators say these elections just mean there will be "more of the same" but for six years instead of the usual four. 27 out of 32 senators and 140 out of 178 deputies are seeking re-election. Of these 24 are running for the PLD and PRSC allies, and 3 for the PRD that seeks to re-elect five of its six senators.
The ruling party currently holds the majority in Congress and controls 22 out of 32 Senate seats and 96 out of 178 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The main opposition party, whose legislators have been supportive of the PLD proposals on most occasions, currently has seven senators and 60 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
The electoral observer mission of the Organization of American States estimated only 35% of the 6,116,397 people eligible to vote actually went to the polls. The 65% abstention would be highest for an election in the DR.
