President Leonel Fernandez took Haiti's plight to the discussion table at the 6th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean taking place in Madrid. President Fernandez invited the heads of government to attend the World Summit on Haiti's Reconstruction set for Punta Cana on 2 June. The theme of the summit is Solidarity Beyond the Crisis. Fernandez pointed out that the situation in Haiti has worsened with the people made homeless by the January earthquake now having to deal with the rainy season.
The summit is taking place at the Madrid Exhibition Center, IFEMA. During the event, some 60 heads of government and state are holding sub-regional meetings -- EU-Cariforum, EU-Chile and EU-Mercosur, as well as the preparatory meeting involving EU-LAC Foreign Affairs Ministers. Heads of State and Government will meet on Tuesday, 18 May at the EU-LAC summit. On Wednesday 19, the EU-Andean Community (CAN) and EU-Central America sub-regional meetings will be held.
