In the absence of President Leonel Fernandez who had already left for Spain, key members of the PLD celebrated their party's victory in the congressional and municipal election. The PLD and allies won 31 of the 32 senate seats, and its traditional ally, Amable Aristy, president of the Dominican Municipal League, won the seat for La Altagracia and the PRSC, according to Bulletin 11 of the Central Electoral Board.
21 senators seeking re-election for the PLD and its allies won their seats for a period of six years. The PLD added 10 more senate seats into the 2010 election.
Re-elected senators are Reinaldo Pared Perez (National District), Cristina Lizardo (Santo Domingo), Amarilis Santana (La Romana), Amilcar Romero (Duarte), Adriano Sanchez Roa (Elias Pina), Ruben Dario Cruz (Hato Mayor), Juan Orlando Mercedes (Independencia), Euclides Sanchez (La Vega), Charles Mariotti (Monte Plata), Heinz Vieluf (Montecristi), Felix Nova (Monsenor Nouel), Wilton Guerrero (Peravia), Francis Vargas (Puerto Plata), Luis Rene Canaan (Hermanas Mirabal), Prim Pujals (Samana), Tommy Galan (San Cristobal), Felix Vasquez (Sanchez Ramirez), Antonio Cruz (Santiago Rodriguez) and Dionis Sanchez (Pedernales).
Political analyst Rosario Espinal attributed the PLD win to the weak opposition and the relative macroeconomic stability compared to the 2000-2004 PRD government.
