PLD dissident Gilberto Serulle, running on the PRD ticket in the Santiago mayoral election, has blocked Santiago Mayor Jose Enrique Sued from winning a third term in the post. Serulle initially sought to run on the PLD ticket, but the ruling party's political committee preferred to continue with the PRSC alliance. In the end, an implicit PLD-PRD alliance took Serulle to power. The president of the Santiago electoral board, Haime Thomas Frias said that of the 1,011 polling stations, 255,000 votes were valid, 6,308 were annulled and 23 observed. The PRD candidate Gilberto Serulle won with 110,748 votes for 49.7%, the PLD and allies with Jose Enrique Sued received 103,021 votes for 45%, and the Dominicans for Change party with Petrouska Munoz won 5,836 votes for 2.59%.
