For the first time ever the PRD has failed to win a single Senate seat. Political analysts attribute the poor showing in the congressional and municipal election to the almost non-existent opposition the party under its president Miguel Vargas Maldonado has exercised since losing the presidency in 2004. The opposition party was weakened further when President Leonel Fernandez, president of the ruling PLD party, announced an alliance with Vargas Maldonado for the new Constitution. Into the congressional and municipal election, Vargas Maldonado handpicked about 80% of the PRD candidates. The party, in general, failed to come forth with attractive candidates, capable of overturning the incumbents seeking re-election. The PRD legislators has so far acted as de-facto allies of the ruling party. Political analysts also attribute the PRD defeat to the omnipresent and growing political patronage and widespread use of government power and resources into the campaign, and the present macroeconomic stability under the Fernandez administration.
