District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra has separated Friday's murder of Ruben Soto Hayet from the case of fugitive Puerto Rican drug baron Jose Figueroa Agosto. Soto had appeared as a purchaser of one of the companies that the Puerto Rican had used to purchase property in the DR, as reported in Hoy.
There have been no arrests in connection with the murder of the owner of La Francesa, a popular coffee shop on Abraham Lincoln Avenue. Soto Hayet has been linked to the case of Figueroa Agosto, said to be the stepfather of Madelin Bernard, widow of Colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez, a close aide of Figueroa Agosto. Gonzalez was murdered on 24 December 2009.
El Dia points out that hired killers are suspect of having eliminated five people with ties to Figueroa Agosto. People linked to Figueroa Agosto who have been murdered are Cesarina Capellan Perez (Vianca la Gorda) on 5 December 2008, former colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez Gonzalez (24 December 2009), Ramon Omar Antigua Polanco (30 January 2010), Jose Gabriel Castillo (26 March 2010) and now Ruben Soto Hayet (14 May 2010).
All the murders have been by shootings and all have taken place in broad daylight.
El Dia makes the point that a report by an investigative commission has yet to be made public, and there have not been any arrests in these cases, with the exception of the murderer of Jose Gabriel Castillo, who was in La Victoria jail with Castillo when the murder took place.
