Would it be ideal to cab it place to place or hire a private driver for 24 hours? Would 50 bucks be enough to have a private driver take me place to place and wait for me for an entire day/night?

i would probably just want to travel outside of Sosua for a day/night therefore would need a ride from wherever i end up late night to bring me back to Sosua.

Stops that i would want to make are: mount isabel, fort san felipe, then to explore puerto plata and get a feel for the area, see where the bars are at, clubs, strip clubs, casino etc...(some of those show dancers i have seen in pics are incredible and im not shy so i will talk) id also like to check out the strip clubs or whatever they call them. ill pay a little more for quality..then head to cabarete to do some exploring, check out the kitesurfing as well as the tourist scene until around dinner time. then go back to sosua, freshen up and decide where i want to spend my night partying....puerto plata or cabarete...then back to sosua late night to find a chic for the night if i strike out exploring of course..

any one have a driver (english speaking would be great)? or have any other recommendations im open ears.

I dont know about the cost for this - but there is too much to do in one evening.

mount isabel, fort san felipe, then to explore puerto plata and get a feel for the area, see where the bars are at, - will take an afternoon or so.

clubs, strip clubs, casino etc...(some of those show dancers i have seen in pics are incredible and im not shy so i will talk) id also like to check out the strip clubs or whatever they call them. ill pay a little more for quality.

I would take a whole evening for this.

Cabarete is the other direction totally.

The nightlife here doesnt really get started till 11pm at the earliest - sometimes as later as 12.30 now.

Dont know enough about cabarete - but i believe from speaking to people for the big party atmosphere Saturday night now is the only busy night.

yeah, id just go with the flow on the time issue. see where it takes me but i need a driver for that so we shall see what i come up with. also, im not to big on spending much time at each place. mount isabel, ill go up, snap a few pics and head down. not going to adventure through the woods or anything...im a mover.

thanks for the info....if i find a driver ill plan better as i know they are in opposite directions. i figured 7 am head to puerto plata until 1, then off to cabarete until 6, then back to sosua to freshen up and decide where to go for the night.....then home at 3 am. i think i can fit a lot in but then again, i never been there before.

I would guess nowhere near enough. 50 bucks is only 1800 pesos. They would charge you that just for a return trip from Puerto Plata to Sosúa. You could perhaps hire a carrito publico with driver for around half the price of a normal private taxi but those guys might not be very good as guides. They spend their lives going up and down one route. I never cease to be surprised at how unaware Dominicans are of things not in their own backyard.

Also as Thunderstar says you need to sketch out a rough timetable and itinerary otherwise you will spend a lot of money and not achieve a fraction of what you envisage. "Play it by ear" is easy in Sosúa which is so compact but you can spend a lot of time getting from one side of Puerto Plata to the other.

That is why I suggested starting at the Teleferico at 8.15am. Come back down around 11.00am and you still have the rest of the day free. Spend the afternoon on the Malecon in Puerto Plata, late afternoon in a couple of seedy Dominican clubs, then the rest of the evening in the slightly more upmarket clubs, ending up at Cristal around 11.00pm.

You could do all that by public transport for a few hundred pesos instead of the 2500 to 3000 a taxi would ask.

Incidentally you might be disappointed with Puerto Plata. I prefer living here but for guys on a holiday and used to Sosúa with hundreds of putas assembled within half a square mile you might find Puerto Plata slim pickings.

Sorry, I didn't read all this before my previous post (which please ignore). I see you are one of the old "If this is Thursday this must be Belgium" school of American tourist. I thought they had all died out in the '80s.

I did the trip to Puerto Plata to the Rum Factory, the Fort, tourist spots, cigar factory, shopping, the big shopping store (like Wal Mart) & later in the afternoon an extended period of time at Blackbeards to do a recon of the place & shoot some pool. Got back about 10:00PM. All day was a negotiated $80 split with 2 other guys w/ chicas. I got the name of the driver from this website. I think it was Antonio. You can find him most often parked in front of New Garden.

Of course if there others to share the cost then a taxi becomes viable.

thanks for the info.....i dont wanna play pool, shop or anything that will waste my time so i think id be able to get around fairly quickly. again its all speculation until i arrive. i might very well not leave the beach....

the fort would just be for pics as well as the mount isabel, i have no interest in the history really....80 bucks split isnt bad at all. i would do the public transportation but i think that would be time wasting as well, plus it would be my first time trying to figure shit out which again will be wasted time if im trying to see a lot in one day....

thanks again for the info.

Make sure you do like Weyland said and hit the Teleferico early, it gets cloudy in the afternoon and you don't have as good a view.
