For those friends of Ted (who used to work at Rockys and more recently at Brittania) he is now working at Pedro`s. If you do not know him, stop and introduce yourself, he has been around town for many years and can tell stories for hours or fill you in on information about anything going on in Sosua.

I met the owner of Pedros last night and asked him what the deal is on the inconsistant hours. He explained that he has been having staffing problems and that is the reasson he has hired Ted.

Hope it works out for Ted,, he is one of the good guys in this town.

Ate breakfast at Pedro McMurphys a couple times in March. VERY GOOD food, service was also very good but I was the only client on both occasions. The waitress was an older, English lady. Pleasant but dry.

I remember seeing Ted at Britannia so often I actually thought he was the owner. Thanks for the update.

I use to frequent Pedro's often, but it was only for the waitress working there, I had thing for her and her sister. They had 100pesos lunch special, and 50 pesos beer specials, but the food always sucked. Now they have an old lady waiting tables? No wonder the place is empty.

I'm very happy for Ted!

He's a great bartender, excellent friend and has a loyal following in Sosua.

It's not at all easy to find viable employment here at this time, worse now that most people can remember going back 10+ years.

There is a lot of potential for both Pedro's and Ted and hopefully it will benefit us all by having another decent restaurant/bar option near the strip.

Ted's great! He made me feel at home on my first trip (important for a newbie). He's one of reasons Rocky's was my home. He can also makes a nice Santo Libre, and used to hook you up with Cialis if you needed it. Glad to hear he's doing well.

Paul was the owner of Brittania and Ted was the head bartender. The bar was recently sold to a young couple from Canada and they laid Ted off. Not a smart move on their part as he has a lot of ex-pat friends who keep bars such as Brittania going during the lulls between the tourist seasons.

I like Ted fine but I will visit in the daytime. Maybe the older English lady is looking for a husband?

Funny you should ask. I have had this laptop for 2 years now and once in a while it switches to the alternative keyboard which apparently is how many laptops are set-up for the Canadian market. Yesterday I finally got sick of it so I googled the problem and it turns out that it is a common problem , especially on HP computers.

You can turn it on and off using " ctrl+fcn+right shift ", not sure if it only works on computers with the special keyboards with the alternative blue characters.

I saw this place only open once during the daytime. You cant operate a restaurant like that. You need consistency with food and hours of operation if you want any business.

Hopefully Ted can bring this place back to life. It did used to have customers especially when it first opened.

Not sure what else there is to tell you. Some days I envy him for his simple life.

I had a good chat with Eric and he was very interested in people's opinions and feedback. in fact he asked me a few tough questions that showed me he's an intelligent guy. As an absentee owner he seems to fully understand the pitfalls as is making a very strong effort to fix past issues like, well....being open consistently.

As i understand it, direct fro Ted, he came for the same reasons many of us do:

1. the weather...no snow!
2. the women
3. I can't remember, jejeje

...and he recently added a 4th reason; he can smoke pretty much anywhere he wants! :D

He has a nice apartment, has a higher wage than many, hopefully makes great tips and can, or at least could, afford to golf a couple time a week. (You'd have to as Ted himself if you want to know more than that...)

but what makes someone follow.... a bartender... ?

it cant be such amazing drink making abilities.. because MOST mongers are drinking santo libre, cuba libre, and presidente. i've had some bad ones, but overall, its not a hard couple of drinks to fuck up..

Ted is "a character" and pours a MEAN Santo Libre!!!

He's a good story teller, has lived here almost 20 years and know a LOT about Sousa and "the scene". When "vitamins" were harder to get, before La Pela, etc...he was a safe source. He luvs to drink and party and has pointed many a guy in the right direction regarding chicas. Working for so long at Rocky's probably helped as well as it has been a real "destination" for many years so many, many, many people have met him. I'm sure he has some guys that are not fans, we all do, but he has a lot of friends and customers that think he's awesome, for whatever reason.

Ted is a good shit. Met him at Britannia while he was bartending there. Had a few beers with him when he got off work. I think he said he was from Alberta. At the time he was living in an apt. right near the Shark Bar down an alley back off the street.

Love to tell a good story, he's full of em. A big fan of classic rock, I brought him a Bob Seger greatest hits cd on one of my visits.

Glad he landed at Pedro's. I will definitely be stopping in a few times when I'm there. And if Pedro's still has the happy hour appetizer and drink specials with the new owner, I'll have my ass in one of those bar stools.

Since the new owner is American, not to be overly patriotic, but just like Big D, it would be nice to support his business providing hours are consistant and customer service is good.

With Ted behind the bar, it sounds like he is going to give it his best shot.

i would like to make a few comments on some of the posts on this thread

Ted...i have known ted for quite a few years going back to rockies, rose and thistle, and lately britania...

i have found ted a reliable friend to talk to, as well i can attest to him being an honest man..one time in rockies he came after me because i had dropped a 500 peso bill on the floor...he is also one of the few people i have met who when they ask to borrow some money for a few days, actually pay you back,,,

ted loves sosua, and many of us who visit love and respect ted.

as for Pedros...
the first owners did a great job of setting up this place and they had consistant service and also control on the quality of food coming out the kitchen.

the next owners, friends of mine, gave a good attempt but personal things in their lives had them decide to sell.

the latest owners, unfortunately are absentee and have in the past have no concept of running a restaurant..it seems they deceided a while back that they were not getting the income they deceided, so their answer to the problem was they closed much of the time and to compensate, they raised the prices in some case 40%. this just made more people including myself to not frequent nearly as much...

Ted will help the service, but they will also have to give some good value. i did not think their specials were all that special,,in fact the sign says a fish sandwich 100 peso,,,well that is no special, that is regular price..add fries and then it may be a special...at the same time they will have to put some effort into the quality of the food coming from the kitchen...

i wish them the best...i like to go there in the past.

Good post.. You have summarised things well.

I stopped by there this morning and Ted was back working on the books. I beleive this is the first time he has actually managed a bar and if anyone has the experience and knowledge to run a bar for an absentee owner in Sosua it is Ted.

Ted just being there is not enough to turn this place around. Competition is tough at the moment, there are few tourist dollars here and the ex-pat communuity have their own favourite places to hang out.

The success of these places is to have a solid base of expats which keeps the door open throughout the year and then attract the tourists and "weekend warriors" to make the place profitable.

I wish him luck at Pedro McMurphys and look forward to seeing the changes he has made when I return in August.

That is a great location near the busy NG and TL hotels and could benefit Rockies too since people always like to go to a area where there are 2 places to go in instead of one.

What up with this place ?, the location is absolutely perfect. Why cant they make it work. And I heard their burgers are really good too, and they have happy hour specials too . Very strange.

I'm amazed that there's still a place named "Pedro McMurphy's". It's been inconsistently run since owner #1.

I met the owner and had a really good long chat with him. He is and intends to be an absentee owner which means almost 100% the business will fail/close.

IF the owner is not there and running the business himself he has to trust someone to do it for him which is almost as risky and improbable that it would work. The manager has to be trusted and enabled, with authority and money, to run the business and that is a huge risk that almost no one is willing to take but without that it just cannot work IMO....

Too bad too as I really like Ted and the bar/location but until the right owner takes over it's just not going to be a consistent business.

Fugly old grannies as the waitress and now Ted. Who do you want to look at when being served? It was working pretty good a few years back when the 2 exceptionally well-endowed and good looking sisters worked there.

Absentee owners will always fail, I will bet on it everytime.

I never cared who owned it, as long as the wings and burgers remain good and those happy hour specials continue......

Ted is a great bartender wherever he works so that is good news that he is at this bar now...
but that one speaking about good wings there is WRONG...
The sauce is just tabasco...they are awful...but anyway if their beers are cold nowadays then I will certainly jump in once soon...

The wings used to be real good. I ate them almost everyday. That was probably a few owners ago.

With less than $5,000 anyone can buy any shitty business in Sosua.

I think you'd find that very difficult to make happen for anything above a basic non-mobile chicken cart.

Define shitty though, please. Be interested to see what you think you could buy for $5000 USD in Sosua.

Pedro McM's has been sold a few times and I understand that it was 6 figures each time...

I have and have seen him and his partner in action since 2005 or so. I understand how tough it is to make a go of starting/running a business in Sosua as do you. I'll probably do it again, just somewhere else! :D

Buying a biz generally costs a lot more than starting one though...

That's too bad. This was a great place for happy hour and watching the chicas go by. Hopefully someone will open it up again. I think with some hot chicas behind the bar and waiting tables this could be a great bar with a great location.

I first went there in 2008 just after the then new owners had bought the place. It was a Canadian couple, nice people. Dude's name is Garth and forgot the old ladies. Then, they had a few hot looking chicas working as bartenders and waitresses. The happy hour appetizers were real tasty, the Presidentes always had a layer of frost on the bottle when served to you. The overhead televisions always were tuned to the hockey or NBA playoffs. It was one of my favorite spots for stopping by while there. Probably went in there every other day in the late afternoon. While there, Garth even mentioned to me that he had just made their first payment!

On my next visit several months later, the opening hours were inconsistant and few customers were to be seen. I heard from the old lady who worked the bar (God...what a turnoff!) that the couple who owned it had split up. That basically started the downward spiral that has apparently enveloped that place ever since. Too bad because it was a great place to hang with friends or even bring a chica in for lunch. I did that many times.

I hope it gets cranked up again one day. But, as Jimmy has said many times before, it needs to be an owner who LIVES there and can be onsite whenever possible. That was and is one of the reasons I think the Britannia has done so well. It had and currently has an owner who lives there, has a place at the Palms as a matter of fact. An active owner, rather than an absentee owner, makes all the difference in the world.

It seems so simple. Hire a couple Hotties with BIG TITS, have them wear skimpy outfits and let them serve the drinks and the food. They cant be salida'd out til AFTER their shift, and make sure the Presidentes are ICE cold. What is the mystery here ???

I remember being there for the NFL playoffs a couple years ago and you couldn't find a seat.......anywhere. It was completely packed. We had to stand outside to get a glimpse of the TVs.

With that being said.....It can be a sucessfull bar with the correct owner/manager. I thought Ted would be the guy.

The mystery is that you need to be there, hands on, running your business. A distant 2nd option is "trusting" someone to not scam and steal from you and run your place into the ground.

Ted might well have been the right guy but I doubt that he was enabled financially to make it work. It's going to be a money pit till the new year, at least, to give it a chance to generate some loyal expat/local clientčle and repeat foreign/vacationing customers....and positive reviews.

These 6 figure sales numbers for the key of a business really drive home how clueless some folks can be.

You got six figures to invest, stick it in a CD. Whatever money you make, you make without risk, and without work.

Is it really that hard to figure out?
