President Leonel Fernandez says that the only international institution that can provide solutions for global problems is the United Nations. During the 6th Summit of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean held yesterday in Madrid, the Dominican leader welcomed the fact that some countries in Latin America are part of the G-20 together with the world's most powerful nations. But he stressed that the other 172 nations that are not part of the G-20 also need to be heard.
At a press conference with the Prime Minister of Haiti, Jean Max Bellerive, Fernandez said that he had received great support from his counterparts who will take part in the World Summit on the Future of Haiti: Solidarity Beyond the Crisis. The Dominican Republic will be hosting this international conference in Punta Cana on 2 June.
Fernandez said that there would be six main priorities for rebuilding Haiti: Economic, cultural and artistic, territorial, institutional and social. He confirmed the Dominican Republic's commitment to build a new university in Haiti to provide higher education for 30,000 students. Fernandez also mentioned the development of tourist areas and agriculture to ensure the country's food supplies.
