The Director General of Customs (DGA) reports that recent measures adopted aimed at preventing the theft of wiring and metals from telephone and electricity companies have reduced these robberies by 95%. Customs director Rafael Camilo warned that the measure that prohibits the export of copper and other metals would be maintained and strengthened. The DGA director's revelations are based on reports supplied by the executives of the main companies that make up the Dominican Association of Telecommunication Enterprises (Adomtel), composed of Codetel, Tricom, Orange and Viva.
Camilo also pledged that the DGA would continue to be "relentless" in its campaign against the theft of wiring and metals in the country, and he said that the scrap metal companies should maintain a rigorous monitoring process in order to be able to export. "It is a clear indicator that in the public sector all that is needed is a little bit of willpower in order to take the decisions that affect interests and institutionalism, the defense of the citizens' interests, those of the very businesses, which oblige us to act", he said as he received a distinction from Adomtel.
