As the popular song by Ruben Blades "Life gives you a lot of surprises," (La vida te da sorpresas...) goes, the recent elections have given us several big ones. They included an end to the seemingly eternal leadership by the PRD senators for Maria Trinidad Sanchez, Jesus "Chu" Vasquez, and Azua, Cesar Diaz Filpo, who have served in the senate for 16 years. Another major upset was the defeat of mayors Jose Enrique Sued in Santiago and Fausto Ruiz in La Vega, breaking a 12-year rule in both cases.
The emergence of the micro-parties also made for some surprises. In the southwestern province of Independencia for example, the town of La Descubierta has a new mayor from the Popular Christian Party (PPC).
In Cabral, Barahona province, the Democratic Christian Union (UDC) candidate, Luis Acosta Moreta (Luis El Gallo) won the mayor's post with 38% of the vote. The UDC also surprised people in Higuey where they obtained 30% of the votes, gaining second place after incumbent Karina Aristy who obtained 42%.
