PRD president Miguel Vargas Maldonado has described the congressional and municipal elections as fraudulent, and announced that his party has begun to give notices of appeals at several municipal election boards. Speaking to reporters yesterday, he accused the PLD of "stealing" more than half of the Senate seats they obtained, by using the money that the people pay in taxes for their campaign. "The fraud took place days, weeks, months before the elections, as the State used its resources to alter the will and feelings that the Dominican people harbored", he declared. He made it clear that they are asking the PRD's Legal Department to begin judicial action, both in response to the electoral violations as well as in the penal aspects, "in all cases that have been proven to have used public funds to benefit the PLD candidates".
He criticized the Central Electoral Board (JCE) for failing to act in the face of the mass purchase of "hundreds of thousands" of voter registration cards (cedulas) on the 14,15,and 16 May.
Vargas Maldonado said that a team of specialists and lawyers from the PRD is trying to establish how in the data that was supplied by scanners to the JCE, 300,000 fewer valid votes appear at the congressional level than at the municipal level, a difference that cannot be explained by the invalid votes.
