State sector doctors' union representatives have accepted a gradual 30% across-the-board wage increase from the government. This ends more than two years of strike action in demand of higher wages with dozens of days of work stoppages at the public hospitals.
Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, who acted as mediator between the government and the doctors, made the announcement after a meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday.
The increases will be phased in through August 2011. The first wage increase will be included in the complementary budget the government will submit to Congress in August. In January 2011, public hospital doctors will receive another 10% increase. A final 5% increase will be included in the complementary budget in August 2011. The complementary budgets adjust the annual budget. For this year, this will mean the government will have to pay an extra RD$900 million in wages.
As part of the agreement, the doctors will have to adhere to schedules. Also, an audit will be carried out to identify ways of improving public hospital services.
The agreement is set to be signed next Wednesday by Vice President Rafael Alburquerque for the government and Dr. Senen Caba for the Dominican Medical Association (CMD).
