The runner-up in the Miss Universe 2009 contest, Miss DR Ada Aimee de la Cruz has been elected to the post of deputy mayor in the Santo Domingo North municipality. She campaigned alongside Francisco Fernandez, on the PRD ticket.
She announced she was resigning her role as first finalist in the Miss Universe pageant on 17 March, dedicating herself to her new role in politics.
The 25-year old is a native of Villa Mella in the municipality of Santo Domingo North.
Upon accepting the nomination, she said she saw it as an opportunity to work for the welfare of her hometown. And she motivated women, young people and the population of Santo Domingo North to give her "a vote of confidence."
She thanked voters for their support. Quoted in El Dia, De la Cruz said "I am grateful that the PRD chose me and opened their arms, despite the fact that I am a young woman in politics, and they trusted me".
