In an article in yesterday's Hoy, economist and political analyst Bernardo Vega commented that the votes for the veteran, formidable Reformist Party (PRSC) are now shared between the PLD and the PRD. "From a tripartite to a bipartite system. That is the big change."
Taking the number of voters who chose a particular party, he writes that in the 2006 congressional and municipal election, the PLD received 52.31% of the total and now received 54.41%, for a moderate growth of 2.1%. Meanwhile, the PRD obtained 21.74% in 2006 and now received 42.01%, for a 21.85% growth.
The PLD won 27 more mayor posts and 9 more senate seats than in 2006 and the PRD won 11 more mayor posts and is expected to add 14-16 deputy posts. The PRSC lost 23 mayor posts, three senators and some deputies.
He comments that the emerging independents didn't make it. None met the required minimum 1% of the vote, and so the extra votes will be distributed amongst the PLD and the PRD.
