Political analysts are divided on whether President Leonel Fernandez will use the PLD majority in the Congress to change the Constitution again to allow him to run for President in 2012. Clave newspaper's 20 May issue focuses on some of the opinions on the issue.
Sociologist Rosario Espinal believes he won't. "A change in the Constitution will not benefit Fernandez. The new Constitution (that prohibits consecutive re-election) already allows him to return in 2016," she says.
Sociologist Ramon Tejada Holguin says that the cost of running for re-election in 2012 could be too high for Fernandez. "The President will need two thirds of the Congressional vote. And we have already emerged from a constitutional reform process that was very traumatic in more ways than one. At one point during that process Fernandez realized that his leadership could be under threat, forcing him to reach an agreement with Miguel Vargas Maldonado so the project could move ahead," he comments.
Sociologist Cesar Perez takes a different view. He says that image problems would not stop Fernandez. But he accepts that he would come up against opposition within his own party. "But that is not an obstacle for him, because his party will do anything to stay in power," he states.
