President Leonel Fernandez used the international scenario provided by the prestigious Spanish business school, Instituto de Empresa (IE Business School) to call for a triangular strategy aimed at linking the Dominican Republic, Florida and Spain. According to Fernandez, Spanish investments in the Dominican Republic could create goods and services to be exported to Florida. As IE Business School president Diego del Alcazar presented the Dominican leader, and the Business Institute provided the platform, Fernandez called on Spanish investors to make the most of the facilities provided by the DR-CAFTA agreement.
Fernandez spoke about software in Spanish, educational materials, health, transportation and finances as areas where Spanish investors could play an important role. He said that there were 40 million Spanish speakers representing a potential market for these goods and services. Fernandez proposed the use of the Cybernetic Park of Santo Domingo as a focal point for this investment. He added: "Beyond the crisis, entering the recovery, the execution of projects such as the remodeling of three main ports, changing the matrix of electricity generation and proceeding with the second line of the Santo Domingo Metro are vital to our government".
In Spain, President Fernandez was also present at the signing of an agreement whereby the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid increased scholarships for Dominicans from 35 a year to 67.
