A total of 2.9 million Dominicans, 28% of the total population, have Internet access only 15 years after the service was introduced, according to the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL).
Indotel head Jose Rafael Vargas pointed out that the Internet "is developing quickly in the DR, with a growth rate of between 67% and 85% from year to year".
In 1995 only Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru and Puerto Rico were connected to the network and these were mostly academic and research connections. Although the DR's original connection to the World Wide Web took place just 15 years ago, the number of accounts has "multiplied more than four-fold".
The 28% figure with access to the Internet, according to Vargas, does not take into account the more than 1000 internet centers around the country which could easily raise the total number of people with regular access to the Internet to over 3 million.
