Dominican tourism has been gaining for the past nine months, in terms of passenger arrivals, after suffering a downturn caused by one of the worst economic crises in history. Compared to other Caribbean destinations also hit by the crisis, the Dominican Republic has managed to put its figures into the black, according to the National Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores). According to executive vice-president Arturo Villanueva, this turnaround did not happen by itself. He said it was the result of combined efforts by the Ministry of Tourism and the private sector at both institutional and individual levels. He was particularly impressed by the open-air policy adopted by the Civil Aviation Board (IDAC), which has permitted many more flights to arrive. He also cited the bilateral treaties that have been signed in the last year for bringing about the increased volume of traffic to and from the DR. While there are many good signs, such as the increase in the number of passenger arrivals, Rafael Blanco Canto, a former president of Asonahores, also warned of the dangers that the falling euro represented for the tourist industry.
