Taxpayers money is being used to transport the rock-ash from Arroyo Barril, Samana to San Pedro de Macoris, where it is being incinerated, after those accused of allowing the entry of the material to the DR were acquitted by a court in San Francisco de Macoris. According to Diario Libre, the Justice Department had asked the court to fine Rene Ledesma with RD$100 million and Rosendo Arsenio Borges RD$25 million, in damages. Environment Minister Max Puig recently said that moving the rock-ash from Samana will cost the state a little more than US$1 million. The case is up for an appeal.
