Pope Benedict XVI met with President Leonel Fernandez on Friday, 21 May and held a 20-minute conversation. During the visit, President Leonel Fernandez invited Pope Benedict XVI to the DR. The Pope said this would be possible in 2011 "if his health and the circumstances allowed."
President Fernandez said he brought greetings from his country and informed him about the World Summit on the Future of Haiti that will start on 2 June in Punta Cana.
The Vatican released a statement:
"During the cordial discussions appreciation was expressed for the great contribution the Church makes to the development of the country, especially in the fields of education and healthcare where it is particularly concerned with the most needy. Emphasis was then given to the importance of continuing to promote human life, from conception until natural death.
They also exchanged views on the Dominican authorities' commitment to combating the social problems affecting the country. As the conversation continued, attention turned to the international and regional situation, in which context the Dominican Republic's role in organizing humanitarian aid to Haiti was highlighted".
Following the meeting with the Pope, President Fernandez met with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States.
