Continuing on his 10-day tour of Spain and Italy, President Fernandez visited L'Aquila, around 112kms from Rome, to see the construction and recovery work that has been done after the city was devastated by a major earthquake (6.7 magnitude) on 6 May 2009. President Fernandez met with local authorities, toured the rebuilt areas and was able to see the new technology being used for building in vulnerable areas.
President Fernandez invited the L'Aquila authorities to share their experiences of managing the disaster at the World Summit on the Future of Haiti that will take place in Punta Cana on 2 June.
Following his visit to L'Aquila, President Fernandez held meetings in Rome and Florence with Italian business representatives who are interested in investing in the DR. Those meetings were coordinated by the DR Center for Exports & Investments (CEI-RD).
The Presidency reports that Italian business organizations and industries that do business or have shown an interest in doing business in the DR took part in the meeting. These included the Confartigianato di Prato, the Confederation of Italian Industries (Confindustria), the National Association of Industrial Business (Anie) and the Dominican-Italian Chamber of Commerce, Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali, NEC, Grupo Ghella, Cerutti Sititu, Cogef, Stone Italiana, Grupo Sparro and Sud West Marine.
Eddy Martinez said that the Confartigianato di Prato is open to reaching a cooperation agreement to establish ties aimed at increasing the added value of apparel and footwear manufactured in the DR.
On Sunday, the President was in Florence where he met with local authorities and business representatives interested in investing in the DR. On Monday, he is scheduled to visit educational centers in Bologna for signing cooperation agreements.
