During his visit to Spain, President Leonel Fernandez told the press that cooperation from the US and Europe is necessary if the DR is to combat drug trafficking and crime. President Fernandez said that DR is "overwhelmed" by drug trafficking and crime, as reported in El Dia. Fernandez said that in recent years the region has been threatened by an increase in drug trafficking, violence and organized crime. "We feel overwhelmed and to confront this with efficiency we need cooperation," he said. He said that the US and Europe are key because the demand comes from there.
He commented that Cuba and the US are already cooperating. "We have asked Obama for more support for us, and for Haiti", he said.
He pointed out that the Colombia Plan had been successful, but that it had resulted in a displacement in drug traffic to Mexico and the Caribbean. He said that the US answer to this problem, the Merida Plan, has not been sufficient.
He called on the US government to stimulate a reduction in domestic consumption of drugs.
