The Ministry of Economy and Planning says that 31.4% of the Dominican population "lives together", 18.5% of the population is married, and 1.5% (104,873) is divorced. The statistics in the report on the System of Social Indicators of the DR show that 2,155,144 people are living as couples without being married, as reported in Diario Libre.
The report also indicates that 5.2% of the population is widowed, 12% are separated (822,889) and 31.4% are single, or 2,154,023 people.
The study indicates that the percentage of married couples has declined. In 2005, of 6,205,527 people, 20.9% were married and 30.6% were living together.
