President Fernandez visited the University of Bologna yesterday for the signing of cooperation agreements with that institution. He expressed optimism that Latin America and the Caribbean would be able to create a framework for uniting programs in university education, similar to what has happened in Europe. He predicted that this would contribute to improving education in the region. The Bologna program offers full scholarships for doctoral studies for 20 Dominican students. The agreement was signed by Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo and the rector of the University of Bologna, Ivano Dionigi. Under the agreement, the Dominican government would pay for students' living expenses and airfares, while the Bologna center would fund the tuition.
Interestingly, the remains of Santo Domingo de Guzman, after whom the capital of the Dominican Republic is named, are buried in Bologna.
President Fernandez is spending his final day in Italy in Milan from where he will return to the DR on Wednesday.
