An egg surplus should mean good news for consumers as prices drop. Chicken farmers say the excess has forced them to drop the price of eggs to RD$2 per large egg, and RD$1 per smaller egg. Consumer protection group Proconsumidor points out that the supermarket prices have remained at RD$176 for a carton of 30 eggs, or almost RD$6 per egg. Manuel Escano, president of the Dominican Association of Egg Producers (Asohuevos) said they decided to publicize the wholesale prices so there would be pressure on the supermarkets to lower the prices. He said that supermarkets should be selling eggs at RD$3-RD$3.50 in the most remote areas.
He said that egg production had been affected by irregularities exercised by the Ministry of Agriculture, as reported in Listin Diario. He said the Ministry had broken the planning of the sector and issued import permits for laying hens arbitrarily.
