In today's El Caribe, journalist Felipe Mora writes on the abstention rate in the 16 May congressional and municipal election.
He says that 1,423,137 voters in the provinces of Santo Domingo and Santiago and the National District (Santo Domingo) chose not to go to vote, according to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) Bulletin 15. Those three areas include 44.3% of the country's 6,116,397 eligible voters.
In the province of Santo Domingo, 573,057 of 1,227,757 went to vote, or 46.68% voted, he says. That is, 654,700 (53.32%) did not vote. In addition, of the 2337 polling stations, there were 21,809 annulled votes, or a 3.81% rate.
In the National District, 435,459 voters did not go to the polls, or 54.69% of those registered to vote. Those who voted were 360,807, 45.31%. The annulled votes totaled 12,042, or 3.34%.
In Santiago, the rate of abstention was lower. Of 686,107 registered to vote, 353,129 voted for 51.47%, compared to 332,438 or 48.53% who didn't vote.
He says that the vote was highest in the poorer border zones, with voting percentages of 73.76% in Independencia, 70.78% in Dajabon, 69.49% in Elias Pina, 69.28% in Montecristi, 66.16% in Pedernales and 66.98% in Bahoruco. Other provinces with high voting percentages were Santiago Rodriguez with 70.27%, San Jose de Ocoa 71.65%, Azua 70.85%, Barahona 67.10%, Monte Plata 6965%, Sanchez Ramirez 67.62%, Samana 68.32%, San Juan 66.17%, Espaillat 65.80% and San Cristobal 65.23%.
