With AMET agents bearing the burden of keeping the peace, traffic in the downtown part of Santo Domingo is getting worse. The detours planned to ease traffic around the construction of the second Metro line and the building of the two tunnels along the 27 of February Avenue have caused traffic to grind to a practical standstill.
There is a noticeable increase in the number of AMET agents assigned to "organize" the long traffic jams, according to Diario Libre.
Leopoldo Navarro Street and the nearby streets are a headache for drivers with the construction of "micro-piles" for the subway is closing South-North traffic on Maximo Gomez Avenue and causing a detour onto John F. Kennedy Avenue.
According to the Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET) it will take three months to finish this work. Over on Nunez de Caceres and Privada avenues, the traffic is also chaotic with the construction of two tunnels.
This series of projects at Nunez de Caceres and 27 de Febrero and 27 de Febrero and Carmen de Mendoza and Dr. Defillo is said to cost about US$40 million.
Diario Libre reports that resignation to long delays is the only option.
