A combined action with air units from the United States Southern Command and the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has resulted in the seizure of two shipments totaling 1,636 kilograms of cocaine.
The drugs reportedly belonged to a Colombian criminal organization said to have branches in the US, Puerto Rico Curacao and the DR.
Speaking at a press conference last night, DNCD head Rolando Rosado Mateo reported that the first operation took place on Saturday, when air units from the US detected a launch and informed the DNCD, which then sent the Dominican Air Force Super Tucano airplanes to follow the craft in Dominican territorial waters south of Saona Island.
When the boat was 19 kilometers from the coastline, the crew realized that they were being followed, threw the cargo overboard and escaped their pursuers. The drugs were picked up by two Dominican Navy coastal patrol boats. They found 44 bags with between 28 and 30 packages of cocaine, weighing a total 1,136 kilograms.
Rosado Mateo said that the second seizure occurred at dawn on Sunday, after another launch arrived off the shores of Bayahibe and later unloaded the shipment in Juan Dolio, in the southeastern region. An estimated 500 kilos of cocaine in 437 packages was then loaded into four luxury SUVs. Seven people were arrested after a shootout near the tollbooths on Las Americas Highway at 3am. They are: Arturo Lopez from Puerto Rico, Cesar Buotrago Cali from Colombia, and from the DR, Ramon Pache Felix, Antonio Ramirez Costero, Daniel Tavarez, Leudi Morato, Ponces and Justo Gernana Rosario.
The DNCD said that Richard Rosario and Benito Vidal Irinio are wanted fugitives in this case.
