The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) forecasts a 5% growth in 2006 for Latin America and the Caribbean. The Caribbean actually should do better than the average, with an estimated 6.3% average growth. And within the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is expected to grow even more, with an estimated growth rate of 7.5%. Its neighbor, Haiti, though, is forecast to grow 2.5%. The region, though, is showing less dynamism than the rest of the developing world. Particularly noteworthy is the negative impact on current accounts in Central America and most Caribbean nations from higher oil prices.
