Non-immigrant visas to the United States will now cost more. A two-tiered fee structure goes into effect as of 4 June. Non-immigrant visas are required for foreigners to travel for tourism, business, temporary work or to study in the US. The US announced worldwide that applicants for business or tourism (B1/B2), crew member (C1/D), student (F or M), or exchange (J) categories will now have to pay $140 and receive a white receipt. For petition-based work visas (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories), you need to pay $150 for which you will get a green receipt. These two receipts can be purchased at approved HDFC Bank branches. K (fiance) applicants will now have to pay $350 at the Consular Section.
Applicants who purchased their receipts before 4 June 2010 need to pay the balance between the old and new fees at the time of the interview. The previous application fee was $131 for all visas.
The US explains that the tiered system has been introduced as petition-based applications require significantly more processing than other visa applications.
