The option for doctors with more than one job to work in a single hospital on a six-hour shift and collect the equivalent of the two shifts at different hospitals is causing some concern for the professionals who have not received any guidance or counseling about this change. Their worries range from wondering if the unification of the two jobs is obligatory, if rights acquired (retirement benefits for example) throughout their professional careers will be maintained, and if they can choose the place where they want to work.
Other questions that they are asking are related to the withholding of income taxes, since they understand that with a larger income the withholding deductions will be larger in the same proportion. One thing that most are in agreement on is to work in just one place, since this eliminates the need to go from one place to another and the resulting inconvenience. During a tour of several health centers, doctors consulted by Diario Libre reporters expressed their doubts, including Teofilo Hernandez and Maria Arias, who work in two hospitals.
Commenting on the situation, former Dominican Medical Association (CMD) president Enriquillo Matos, who promoted this new health model, says the rights and benefits will be maintained as they come under the law on health. Matos says that there are still questions about the tax treatment.
The new system will begin in August in health regions IV and VI and is included in the agreement that was signed between the CMD and the Government.
