The next Atlantic hurricane season is likely to be unusually active, according to predictions from the US National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In fact, this year's June to November season might be "extremely active and surpass historic records", according to Hoy newspaper. The Under-secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA administrator, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, said that the season would be active to extremely active due to three key climate conditions: a weakening "El Nino" off the west coast of South America, higher than normal Atlantic Ocean temperatures and the acceleration of the tropical cycle that began in 1995, with eight of the top ten seasons occurring within this time frame. If these three factors coincide, the hurricane season, "could be the most active on record". In 2005 there were 28 named storms, the most ever.
