A Puerto Rican suspected of having smuggled cocaine was arrested at Las Americas International Airport on Saturday upon his arrival from Venezuela. Dominican Antonio Carmona, who was meeting him at the airport, was also arrested. Carmona is said to be his driver and bodyguard for operations in the DR. According to the DNCD, Luis Vasquez Rivera is one of the key figures in an international drug trafficking ring based in Colombia with branches in Puerto Rico, Curacao, Venezuela and the DR. DNCD investigators say he is the chief of the gang that air-dropped 1,636 kilograms of cocaine during the dawn hours of last Sunday, near the island of Saona and of the 437 kg that were seized two weeks ago, as reported in Diario Libre.
An arrest order no. 9404-2010 had been issued against Vasquez for trafficking in 500 kilogramss of cocaine. Carmona is on file for having been deported from the US for drug trafficking, as reported in Hoy. The 500-kilo shipment was confiscated last week in a joint operation between the Dominican authorities and US Southern Command units.
