Jose Lima fills Cibao stadium

A funeral ceremony with a stadium full of mourners took place at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago on Sunday. Thousands of Aguilas Cibaenas fans were at the stadium to bid their final farewell to charismatic and very entertaining baseball player Jose Lima. Listin reports that "at 3pm, not standing on the box, but lying in his coffin, without his baseball uniform but in a suit, he fulfilled the role he had never imagined, and without trying a pitch to home, he had all the public on his side." Merengue bandleader Hector Acosta (El Torito) sang in honor of his friend. Sports Minister Payano attended. Lima was buried at Las Charcas cemetery in Santiago. Dozens of Dominican ballplayers paid homage to the popular pitcher, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home on Sunday, 23 May. He was 37.
