President Leonel Fernandez, President Rene Preval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive of Haiti, and former US President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speakers at the World Summit for the Future of Haiti: Solidarity Beyond the Crisis that opens tomorrow at the Moon Palace in the north of the Punta Cana-Bavaro area. Under the leadership of President Leonel Fernandez, the conference seeks to confirm sustainable commitments towards Haiti's recovery. Representatives of more than 50 countries and 35 multilateral organizations will be taking part.
Confirmed participants include former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson, representing the Caricom heads of government, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza, Costa Rican Vice President Luis Liberman, Deputy Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea Aniceto Ebiaca Moete, Deputy Vice Minister of Kenya Musalia Mudavadi, Secretary General of the Union of Nations of the South (Unasur) Nestor Kirchner, Minustah Secretary General Edmond Mulet and Inter-American Development Bank president Luis Moreno.
The Summit seeks to provide a forum for discussions on the re-founding of Haiti that is requiring a huge effort and the execution of an action plan that is financially and technically sustainable.
Specific focus will be on the development of the following central themes: Economic Re-Foundation, Territorial Re-Foundation, Social Re-foundation, and Cultural and Artistic Recovery.
The Summit will review the donor countries and organizations' commitments, present a list of the projects containing the priority activities for each pillar of the Action Plan and provide a detailed account of the progress made in managing the reconstruction process.
On 31 March, the United Nations hosted the International Donors Conference on Haiti securing pledges of US$5.3 billion for the next two years and US$9.9 billion for the next three years and beyond.
It is anticipated that the World Summit will consolidate an action-plan to begin reconstruction work for the development of critical infrastructure including highways, potable water systems, electricity, housing, schools and universities.
