A recently released book, "Crimes against the press" by journalist Oscar Lopez Reyes contains a new theory about the death of university professor Narciso Gonzalez (Narcisazo). He presents the hypothesis that Narcisazo could have committed suicide. The section on the professor says that he was suffering from severe depression and had told his closest friends that he would take his life and disappear. Gonzalez disappeared on 26 May 1994 and to date it has been speculated that it was a crime by the state, after he published criticism against then President Joaquin Balaguer calling him "the most perverse that the continent has had."
