Violence has taken 41 lives in the last two weeks, but it so happens that only half of the crimes are made public, because the police statistics, although noted are not counted. According to El Caribe, the reason is never explained but it is reflected in the inventory of deaths that the National Police publish at the end of each year. The newspaper cites as one example seven deaths that occurred on 21 May. These deaths were recorded all over the country but the next day the PN Public Relations office only mentioned two cases, one in Santo Domingo and one in Santiago. From 16 May to 30 May, 29 people were killed in robberies and eleven others were murdered during fights or shoot-outs with police patrols.
The Forensic Pathology Institute reported that 87% of the violent deaths reported during this period occurred in the National District or the province of Santo Domingo. Seven percent of the victims were from Santiago and the remaining 6% were divided between Bonao, Dajabon, Samana, Barahona, San Cristobal and Haina.
According to today's papers, the son of prominent lawyer Negro Veras, Jordy, also a lawyer was shot twice as he arrived at the television station where he has a daily news commenting program. He was operated on at the Corominas Clinic in Santiago.
