Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) has said that by the end of the first quarter of 2011, half of the energy in the country will be produced by natural gas.
The executive vice-president of the CDEEE said that in part this would be accomplished by the conversion of the 60 megawatts of LAESA in Pimentel on the northeast and the 300 MW of Cogentrix in San Pedro de Macoris to natural gas. In addition there is another, short term natural gas installation in Esperanza that is expected to go on-line shortly.
Marranzini said that the "new" megawatts that would be available in the first quarter of 2011 and would contribute to stabilize the electricity in north.
In his interview with reporters from La Informacion, Marranzini revealed that it will cost US$2.5 billion to make the national electricity system more efficient. He reported that in subsidies alone the government has spent US$8 billion.
He reaffirmed his commitment with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that calls for an increase of clients/customers from 1.3 million to 1.9 million this year and up to 2.3 million in 2011.
