The Metereological Office forecasts better weather nationwide starting this Friday.
The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) has issued a forecast that calls for less rain for today because the low pressure trough that was over the eastern portion of the country has moved off to the Northeast. The rains that fell yesterday, combined with the problems of drainage, made traffic difficult in Santo Domingo.
According to the bulletin from the Center of Emergency Operations (COE), so far the rains caused by a low pressure trough caused the overflow of the Manati River caused the bridge that connects Loma de Cabrera with Capotillo, Dajabon to cave in down. In the same province, the Masacre River flooded the barrios of Puerto Rico, Villa Codeco and Barrio Norte, with eight families being evacuated. These families have now returned to their homes.
Similar evacuations took place in Moscu, San Cristobal, where 50 families were moved because of the flooding of the Arroyo Sabana Toro and the Haina River. There were also two families moved in Mendoza in East Santo Domingo.
The COE elevated the alert level from green to yellow, against flooding and landslides for the National District and the provinces of Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, San Pedro de Macoris, La Vega, and Monsignor Nouel. At the same time, the COE is keeping the green alert in place for Sanchez Ramirez, Duarte, La Romana, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Montecristi, Dajabon, Mao-Valverde, and Santiago Rodriguez.
The Public Health authorities have issued alerts regarding possible outbreaks of diseases due to the constant rains of the last weeks. They have asked the citizen not to swim or bathe in contaminated waters that could transmit leptospirosis. The Ministry of Public Health said that it had activated all of the emergency committees and specialized health professionals in the 11 provinces that are under the alerts. The ministry is warning against outbreaks of dengue, malaria, and leptospirosis among others.
