Today, the Ministry of Tourism officially begins the World Bank rehabilitation program of beaches at a cost of EUR 14 million (some US$19 million) that will benefit 14 kilometers of beaches in Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. Approximately 1.4 million cubic meters of sand will be pumped. In the case of beaches on the north coast, the sand will be gotten from sand banks in Rio San Juan. The turn-key project is being performed by three foreign firms: Boskalis International, from the Netherlands, Cadic Group from Spain ad Cesigma from Cuba. Their work includes environmental impact analyses, coast engineering studies, rehabilitation process and a beach use and maintenance manual. The work will cover one kilometer of beach per day and is guaranteed between 5 and 10 years depending on natural factors and the maintenance they receive. President Leonel Fernandez will inaugurate the Puerto Plata project on 5 August at 4:00 pm. The traditional beaches of Puerto Plata (Long Beach and Playa Dorada) will be able to hold some 20,000 bathers. The private sector is contributing US$3.5 million to the total cost of the project.
