During a PRD gathering at the Carlos "Teo" Cruz boxing arena, former President Hipolito Mejia announced he aspires to run for President on the PRD ticket in the 2012 election. In his speech, he criticized the PLD government and called for unity within the PRD. The PRD, while being the single party to receive the most votes in the congressional and municipal election held 16 May 2010, was not able to obtain a single senator seat and saw a decline in the party's representatives in the Chamber of Deputies for the 2010-2016 term.
Others who have announced their aspirations for the PRD are party president Miguel Vargas, former agriculture minister Eligio Jaquez and former finance minister Luis Abinader.
Mejia is able to run again following the approval by Congress of the 2010 Constitution. Mejia was President from 2000-2004. Upon completing his term, he was banned from running for reelection but changed the Constitution in 2004 to be able to run again. He lost to today President Leonel Fernandez.
In his words to his followers, Mejia recognized the errors of his administration and promised to capitalize on his experience for a better government if he is elected again.
