Julio Becerra Rivero from the US won the First International AES Chess Cup, organized by the Dominican Chess Federation. In the final, Becerra defeated Dominican William Puntier to win the US$4,000 prize, followed by Jaan Ehlvest of the US, Nikola Mitkov (Macedonia), Rodney Perez Garcia (Cuba), Lelys Martinez (Cuba), Lemay Vega (Cuba), Ramon Mateo (DR). Participating were chess players from the DR, Macedonia, US, Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
