The Human Development Office of the United Nations in the Dominican Republic announces the launching of a report with findings of research on the social situation of the country. The report shows the DR is way behind in its goal for improvements in education, health, equity and poverty reduction. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Economy and Planning as part of preparation of the National Development Strategy (END), the long term development plan.
Economy Minister Temistocles Montas says the report shows that little progress has been made in improving living conditions of Dominicans, it highlights the weaknesses in social policies, and stresses that the present high economic growth has contradictorily fostered social exclusion. Education and health show low quality and low funding. "We have to face the problems into the next 20 years," he said.
The report focuses on how to move on from the present clientelism in the political system to a strengthening of capacities; going from short term thinking to long term thinking; from acting given the circumstances to creating a project of a nation; moving from individual to social cohesion. The report focuses on how to achieve improvements in the areas of education, health, employment, social assistance and security, human settlements, justice, Haitian immigration and social cohesion.
The report concludes that access to opportunities needs to be a right, and not be limited to political discretion. Social policies need to create capacities in persons so these can achieve their aspirations.
The launching of the report will be tomorrow, Wednesday, 9 June at 6pm at the Manuel del Cabral Auditorium of the Pedro Mir Library at the UASD, the state university.
