Celso Marranzini, director of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) urged city governments to prune trees now that the hurricane season is starting. He said that already some failures in electricity are attributed to the falling of trees on electricity lines. He also attributed blackouts to the low level of the dams that for several months had operated at half their capacity. He said, nevertheless, that power generation is now up for the January to April period, from 909 gigawatts in 2009 to 1,014 gigawatts in 2010.
He said that if everyone paid for the service there would be enough capacity to supply 100%. He said this was proven in Christmas and on election day.
He said that on this Monday, 80% of the demand, estimated at 2,282 megawatts, was met.
He announced the CDEEE is investing US$80-100 million in the placement of telemeters in sectors of high consumption in Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristobal.
He announced renegotiations of contracts with suppliers under the Madrid Accord for savings of US$50 million a year.
He said the CDEEE is now the sole purchaser of power from state-owned hydroelectric generators. In the past the generators would purchase the power from the hydroelectrics at US$0.8 cents and sell it at US$0.18 cents, making a profit of US$0.10 as the intermediary.
