Orange Dominicana says it is offering 7.2 megabytes per second, without interruptions in its new product, Orange Net 3G+ launched last February. The service is available in the National District, Santiago, Bavaro, Punta Cana, La Romana, Casa de Campo, Higuey and Bayahibe. Service at 14.4 will be gradually introduced. The average for the DR is at 0.73 Mb/s according to Net Index (speedtest.net) that places the DR 154th of 178 countries tested in the world.
Jean Marc Harion, president of Orange in the DR, told Listin Diario, Harion that by the end of July, communities in Puerto Plata, La Vega, Moca and San Cristobal will be able to connect to the fast Internet service. He said the INTEC certified the connection as the best in the country. He said that by year's end, the service would have 70% coverage. 6,000 users have connected to the service so far.
Harion believes the challenge in the DR is to reduce the cost of the service. He feels that elimination of taxes would contribute.
Tibaud Rerolle, director of technology for Orange Dominicana, says that another way to reduce the cost of the service in the DR and increase usage would be to separate the Internet service from the fixed telephone line service. He says in the DR even if a user does not need the fixed line service, the telecom companies oblige the contracting of the service to receive Internet service.
